Sparks often fly at big family gatherings, though they also provide opportunities for all kinds of plots and sub-plots. I have used them but not consciously added them. This gives me inspiration for the times when I feel a story needs something extra - perhaps a boost of excitement with preparations or - as above - a way of bringing the characters together.
